DOVER CASTLE

Dover Castle was built in 1066 by William of Normandy, but it looked nothing like it does today. During the 1180s upon the direction of King Henry II, the castle was totaly rebuilt and most of the walls and buildings you see in the picutres below were added. Dover Castle served as an active British military fort from its creation all the way up to the end of World War II. During the Middle Ages, a network ot tunnels were constructed under and around the castle grounds to provide a protected line of communication for the soldiers manning the outter posts. The tunnels were expanded during the Nepolionic wars and used as barraks for the soldiers. When war broke out in Europe in 1940 the tunnels became the nerve center for many British operatins during the war. Many antiaircraft guns were placed around the grounds. The castle grounds also housed the first operational early warning radar system. The radar feed was pumped down into the operations room deep within the tunnel system. The tunnels were restored and look as they did during the war. Unfortunatly, photographs were not allowed in the tunnels.
